The Poet's Voice

I smothered the poet's voice
to walk in a world that values real things
to speak of pleasantries and causeries
and things the world can add up, justify, find sensible.
But every night the voice would return like an orphaned child
crying in my sleep,
I searched for her mother, not knowing the child
was mine to keep.

Make Me A Riverbed

(excerpt)

You traced the history
then the geography
of grief
in your body,
one crystallized fear at a time.
You listened,
made a covenant with stillness,
took your vow of silence.

And there they were:
fears beckoning,
asking to be moved,
to be undone,
to be unshaped
from rock to river,

asking for a promise
of safe passageway.

And the way kept appearing,
unhurried, forming a riverbed
with its arms open,
waiting,
saying,
Come flow through here.
I know you by heart.

Lantern

You don’t owe the world your pain.
It is not a debt,
nor evidence of your strength.
But if one day
you choose to offer it—
let it not be the wound on display,
but the warmth
that rose
through it.
Let it be the trace of light

 you gathered in the dark,
the softness
you learned to cradle
in the silence.
Let it be a lantern—

 not to retell the fire,
but to gently
guide another
home.

Cradle of Being

(excerpt)

Sometimes you’re pulled
by
the mystery so much
it will not let you rest upon the earth,
and you think you’re holding
a thread of truth
like a light you thought you had lost.
But it is here -
in the trees that carry the echo of your being,
in your backyard,in your front yard,
in the soil of your kitchen plant,
in the mud pressed to your doormat,
you don’t have to travel far.
